Free Grayscale Image Converter - Black & White Photo Tool
Convert to Black & White in One Click
Drop in your photo and our free grayscale converter strips out the color and gives you a clean, natural-looking black and white version. No sliders to fiddle with, no settings page — just upload and download. Works on portraits, landscapes, product shots, and any other image type.
Why Not Just Desaturate?
Desaturating (what most basic tools do) treats all colors equally. The result is often flat and muddy — red and green objects turn the same shade of grey and blend together. Our converter uses luma weighting, which accounts for how the human eye perceives brightness. Greens stay lighter, blues stay darker, and the result looks like a photo taken on black and white film rather than a drained-out version of the original.
When to Use Black & White
- Portrait photography — removes skin-tone distractions, focuses attention on expression and lighting
- Document scans — grayscale scans are smaller and scan better with OCR software
- Print preparation — printing in grayscale uses only black ink and costs less
- Artistic effect — high-contrast B&W can make ordinary photos look dramatic and timeless
- Social media — consistent black and white creates a strong visual brand identity
Output Options
Download as JPG (smaller file, good for web and social) or PNG (lossless, good for further editing or print). Either way, the full original resolution is preserved — no resampling, no quality loss from the conversion itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my grayscale look better than basic desaturation?
Because we use luma weighting (ITU-R BT.601 standard) rather than a simple average of R+G+B. The human eye sees green as brighter and blue as darker. Luma weighting reflects that, so your B&W has natural contrast. Basic desaturation gives every color the same brightness weight, making red and green look identical — that's why faces often look flat.
Can I make a B&W version for print?
Yes. Download as PNG for the cleanest result for print. Grayscale images print using only black ink, which reduces print costs and avoids color cast issues from CMYK conversion. The full original resolution is preserved — no downscaling.
Does converting to grayscale reduce my file size?
Yes, typically. A grayscale JPG is roughly 30–50% smaller than the color equivalent since there's less color data to store. A grayscale PNG may be similar in size to the color version depending on the image content.
Is my photo safe here?
Yes. Conversion runs entirely in your browser via WebAssembly — your photo is never uploaded to any server. We have no access to your files. Browser memory is cleared when you close the tab.
