UPSC Photo and Signature Size — Civil Services Application Requirements

UPSC Photograph and Signature Upload Requirements

The Union Public Service Commission allows a noticeably wider file-size window than SSC or IBPS — up to 300 KB rather than 50 KB — which means you can submit a visibly sharper photograph. The constraints that actually cause rejection here are visual, not numerical.

Always confirm against the current notification. Exam boards revise upload rules between cycles. The figures below reflect the requirements published for the most recent cycle at the time of writing — treat them as a starting point and check the official notice or the upload page itself before you submit.

Use the headroom you are given

Because UPSC permits up to 300 KB, do not compress to 30 KB out of habit. A photograph at 150–250 KB retains far more facial detail, and your photograph is checked against you in person at the interview stage. There is no advantage to a smaller file and a real disadvantage to a degraded one.

How to hit the size limit without wrecking the photo

The common mistake is dragging a quality slider down until the file is small enough. That produces a blurred, blocky image that fails visual verification even when the file size passes. Do it in this order instead:

  1. Set the pixel dimensions first. A phone photo is often 4000 × 3000 px. Resizing to 200 × 230 px removes the vast majority of the file weight before any compression is applied, and it does so without introducing artefacts.
  2. Then compress to the target. With the resolution already correct, reaching 20–300 KB needs only mild compression, so the face stays sharp.
  3. Check the lower bound too. Portals reject files that are under the minimum as often as over the maximum. If the result lands below 20 KB, raise the quality rather than leaving it.

Photograph the signature or scan it on plain white paper in good light. A grey or shadowed background forces the compressor to spend bytes describing noise instead of the strokes themselves.

Rules specific to UPSC

  • No spectacles. UPSC notifications have explicitly disallowed glasses in the photograph. This is one of the most common causes of rejection and it is not a file-format issue.
  • White background, not off-white. A cream wall or a light grey backdrop is frequently flagged.
  • Recent photograph. Check whether the current notification requires a date printed on the image.
  • Face clearly visible. No headwear obscuring features, no shadows across the face, neutral expression.

Because the Civil Services process runs over many months and involves in-person verification, a photograph that genuinely resembles you now is worth more than one optimised for file size.

Every step runs inside your browser through WebAssembly. Your photograph and signature — both documents that identify you — are never uploaded to a server, never stored, and never seen by anyone but you. For an application containing your name, date of birth and photograph, that matters more than convenience.

Frequently asked questions

What is the required photo size for UPSC?

The photograph should be a JPEG between 20 KB and 300 KB, around 200×230 pixels, taken against a white background. Spectacles have been disallowed in UPSC notifications, so check the current notice.

Should I compress my UPSC photo as small as possible?

No. UPSC allows up to 300 KB, which is far more headroom than SSC or IBPS. A photograph at 150–250 KB keeps much more facial detail, and it is checked against you at the interview stage. There is no benefit to a smaller file.

Can I wear glasses in the UPSC photograph?

UPSC notifications have explicitly disallowed spectacles in the application photograph. This is a frequent cause of rejection. Confirm against the notification for your cycle before submitting.

What size should my UPSC signature be?

The signature is uploaded as a JPEG in the same 20–300 KB window as the photograph, written in running handwriting on plain white paper.
